Powell is a consultant on national television and feature films; he styled Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line, Cameron Diaz in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, as well as a list of other high-profile clientele and projects with Kim Basinger, Hilary Swank, and Benicio del Toro.
Powell has also created a line of natural hair therapies made of herbs from his very own home garden tailoring each one to address the individual needs of his clients at the Sally Hershberger Salon.
Cliché: What are your core hair care and/or styling tips for men and women?
Corey Powell: Women, don’t leave the house without doing something to your hair. Smooth the bangs and the ends of your hair for a polished look. Some quick suggestions: A high or low ponytail (add a ribbon or headband), chignon, or a pretty plait. Take the time out [of your day] to make yourself look and feel good.
Men, find a product to your liking; application is key. Put product in hand, rub hands together, and start at the nape of the neck. Run the product through your hair, moving hands toward the face.
It’s difficult to duplicate the “salon look” at home. Any suggestions?
Take the time to teach yourself! Grab your favorite beverage and hair tools. Allow 30 to 60 minutes to wash, blow dry, and style your hair. If it helps, record your stylist while they are doing your hair. Once you have mastered styling, it shouldn’t take you longer than 10 to 15 minutes.
What are the best must-haves at home regarding hair styling products or equipment?
The Parlux 3800 hair dryer is among one of my favorite styling instruments, along with Y.S. Park Round Brushes. Sally Hershberger’s Texture Blast and Shu Uemura’s Satin Design are also great products.
Are using hair conditioners just as important for men as they are for women?
For the most part, yes. It all depends on hair texture and amount of hair.
What about covering gray? How can one avoid that “shoe polish” look men tend to get?
When applying color, leave out the hairline until the last five to seven minutes.
Women like to gossip in the salon. Do you find men do, too? Can you dish?
The real difference between men and women in the salon is what is discussed. I’ve found that men usually talk about recent dates and new places to go out, while women gossip about people and their relationships.
What secret styling tips can you give that you do or use on your celebrity clients?
I usually precondition my clients’ hair with oil and then brush and blow-dry to work the oil in hair for a sleek look. For extra body, I apply a light dry shampoo and create definition with a thick wax.
Is there anything trending in men or women’s hairstyles for this holiday?
For holiday hair, women are choosing cooler blondes, warmer reds, and richer browns (closer to chocolate), and short textured cuts for the men.
What about fun “glitz” to use in the hair for party-time?
One can never go wrong with a fabulous up-do!
