Today we want to discuss the latest alcohol use statistics. Alcohol has been around for thousands of years. It’s a staple in many families’ homes, is commonly enjoyed at holidays & celebrations, and is used as a means of relaxation after a long day. Millions around the world of different cultures and backgrounds drink alcohol at some point in time.

Below are some alcohol use statistics that imply the realities behind this common adult beverage. The results may shock you!

  1. The Number of U.S. Adults Who Drink Alcohol Decreased By 5% Over the Years

There’s no doubt that alcohol is, and still remains, to be a popular beverage of choice for many individuals all around the world. However, the number of people who drink regularly is decreasing, at least in the United States.

In 2019, a poll showed that 65% of U.S. adults consumed alcohol on a regular basis. That number decreased to 60% by 2021. The average number of alcoholic beverages drunk at a time per U.S. adult also declined.

  1. 90% of Millennials Purchased Alcohol in a Year’s Period

While it doesn’t suggest that millennials are the heaviest of drinkers, 90% of them, however, have purchased alcohol within a year’s time.

This could suggest that most of the millennial population in the United States drinks alcohol, whether that be a drink here and there or quite regularly. The reason for this statistic is believed to have to do with the financial, political, and mental/emotional stress this generation often faces.

Much to our surprise, gen z is said to be less likely to drink alcohol than the millennial generation. As mentioned, millennials tend to have higher stress and anxiety levels, which may point to their higher alcohol use.

On the other hand, studies show that individuals apart of generation Z are more likely to be realists than millennials. Perhaps that makes them better at handling anxiety and stress-inducing events & situations.

  1. Alcohol is the Most Common Method of Substance Abuse in America

While the use of alcohol seems to have decreased in newer generations, it’s still considered one of the most commonly abused substances in America.

This is because alcohol is one of the few substances that’s legal to purchase. It’s also one of the most socially accepted substances in the United States.

  1. Over 50% of Adults Have Alcoholism Running in Their Family

While the consumption of alcohol has decreased, it doesn’t change the fact that there are still cases of alcoholism. Half of adults in the U.S. have alcoholism running in their family. This statistic may take you by surprise.

On a brighter note, there is a lot of great help out there for people struggling from alcoholism. AA meetings, day treatment, and counseling or therapy are all options worth considering.

Conclusion

While not everyone drinks it, alcohol is a beverage that so many have consumed over several centuries. Interestingly enough, younger generations are less likely to drink alcohol than their older generation counterparts. Still, though, alcohol abuse is still a very real problem in our world worth addressing.
