Cliché: What are your core hair care and/or styling tips for men and women?
Ricardo Rojas: This season, it’s all about texture. With the harsh winter weather, I recommend preserving your hair, and the best way to do it is through texture. For men, I suggest using a styling pomade from Oribe or Leonor Greyl Paris to achieve the perfect winter look. For women, loose, soft curls and waves provide much-needed volume for the winter. For those women who prefer having their hair up, I also recommend a sleek ponytail to show off facial features.
What are the best-must haves at home regarding hair styling products or equipment?
To achieve the salon look at home, it is important to invest in a good shampoo and texturizing lotion or spray. My favorite products include Oribe’s dry texturizing spray and Leonor Greyl’s Voluforme setting spray to achieve lasting looks.
What secret styling tips can you give that you do or use on your celebrity clients?
Every client is different, so I focus on the texture of the hair in order to decide what styling technique and products to use. I focus on creating a young, fresh, and vibrant hairstyle for my celebrity clientele.
Is anything trending in men’s or women’s hairstyles for this holiday?
Bobs are back. This season, women love the look of short hair. After the damage of sun and water from the summer, the wintertime is the perfect time to do the big chop. Men, on the other hand, are growing out their hair, especially in Europe. They love the look of long, textured hair.
How do you prevent color fade?
It comes down to good hair care. It is important to visit your stylist every six weeks to receive a conditioning treatment. I recommend investing in a good shampoo from either Oribe or Leonor Greyl Paris. He especially loves Oribe’s Beautiful Color shampoo and Leonor Greyl’s Bamboo shampoo.
Is there such a thing as color trend for hair?
This season it’s all about the blondes! Women have loved gold or platinum blonde looks, almost as if the hair industry is paying homage to the 80’s blonde hair trend.
Dry cut vs. wet cut? Which is better?
The best cut depends on the thickness of hair. I prefer dry cutting because it is easier to see the way that the hair will fall, but only I recommend a dry cut if the hair is very thick.
Extensions… men and women… who wears them?
Both men and women wear extensions—yes, MEN. A lot of male celebrities need them depending on the project that they are working on, and the character they must portray. However, a lot of men wear individual hair extensions to add subtle volume to the head. Most women who wear extensions, however, use the seamless method. These extensions add length and thickness to the hair, allowing for volume all year long.
If you could, what new hairstyle would you give these celebs to create a fresh new image?
Kim Kardashian—although she is known for her long waves, I envision a drastic change for the Kardashian star. I’d chop them off! To really make a statement, I’d bring her back to a dark brown hair color, with caramel, sun-kisssed ends. This would give Kardashian a more modern, elegant soft look, similar to that of actress Sophia Loren.
And Mila Kunis. Another star known for her long, dark hair, Mila Kunis would also experience a chop. For Kunis, I would create a very short bob to accentuate her eyes and facial features. I would leave her hair dark to compliment her skin tone.
