Kim Kardashian has opened up about her approach to raising her 13-year-old daughter, North West, as she grows up in the public eye with a career in the music industry.
The 45-year-old admitted in a recent interview that she often has to “hold back” her ambitious teenage daughter, who has reportedly already built a net worth in the tens of millions.
Kim Kardashian also addressed her co-parenting dynamic with ex-husband Kanye West, saying they have a “better” relationship in that respect and have improved their communication when it comes to their kids.
Kim Kardashian Manages North West’s Fame By Sometimes Holding Her Back
North has been particularly enthusiastic about appearing in the limelight, but Kim has made a conscious effort to limit the 13-year-old’s public exposure.
In her new interview with The Sunday Times, she explained briefly how her North differs from the rest of her children when it comes to engaging with fame and their family’s public profile.
“My little ones come around when I’m filming, but they don’t really do storylines,” Kim said, adding that “North loves it a little bit more than the rest. I hold her back.”
Kim elaborated on the restraint she places on North. She said, “All she wants to do is forward-facing projects. And so, it’s like us really kind of trying to savor those moments and not doing everything that comes her way.”
The SKIMS founder is intent on managing her kid’s public presence “the right way,” especially for North, whose career is becoming music-related.
Kim Kardashian’s Parenting Approach Has Previously Drawn Criticism
Kim’s parenting of her daughter North has frequently faced public scrutiny on social media and in other news reports.
In August 2025, North debuted a dermal finger piercing, which sparked outrage as people were concerned about the potential risks of such a body modification.
Lulu Ave, a piercing company, reportedly noted the dangers such piercings carry, noting that they “may not heal well due to the constant use of the hands and the risk of the jewelry getting snagged or bumped.”
A lot of the outrage was directed at Kim’s parenting. According to Globe, one critic wrote online, “This is what happens when you need to be your child’s best friend and not a rational adult.”
Another wrote, “Well, as I’m sure many know, one of the narcissist’s mother’s greatest threats is her daughter.”
As reported by E! News, North later addressed the online commentary in a video she published on her TikTok account, lip-syncing to a “Why are you crying?” audio clip which she captioned “this is for everyone that’s mad over a finger piercing.”
- North faced mixed reactions after saying she wants to have a “regular job” at Starbucks.
- Kanye West’s daughter’s body modifications at 13 alarmed fans.
- The young singer recently flaunted her face piercings.
- North was warned by a medical expert that she’s at risk of “disfigurement.”
- An expert reacted to Kanye going months without seeing daughter North.
- North sparked fears after revealing bruises caused by removal of her finger piercings.
North’s Rise In The Music Industry
13-year-old North has been on the rise in the industry since she began her music career.
She released her debut EP, “N0rth4evr” earlier in the year and has since appeared on the cover of Dazed magazine in a shot by celebrated filmmaker Gus Van Sant.
In her interview with the publication’s head of fashion, Marios Mystidis, North made her ambition and love for the limelight clear.
She claimed to be “rehearsing every day,” and noted that someone telling her to start her career when she was older was the “worst piece of advice” she had ever received.
“It’s like, nah, this is my hobby, this is what I like to do, this is what I wanna do with my life,” the teenager explained, per Complex.
North Says All She Wants Is ‘Blue Hair And Piercings’
North, in her Dazed interview, further noted that she was fully focused on her music career and had no interest in typical teenage distractions.
“Everyone’s in love with boys, vaping, and doing all kinds of bad stuff. All I want is blue hair and piercings,” North said, as per People Magazine.
The teenager also revealed a restriction her parents have placed on her when it comes to piercings on her body.
“I really want to get my bridge pierced, but I’m not allowed,” she said, adding that she loves the practice because, “They just make you your full self.”
Kim Kardashian Talks Co-Parenting With Her Ex-husband Kanye West
Kim and Kanye have previously fought over their approach to raising North as she builds her music career.
They previously clashed over Kanye including their daughter on a track that featured Sean Combs, otherwise known as Diddy, who was facing a s-x abuse trial at the time.
Kanye had also accused Kim of encouraging inappropriate behavior in North and even threatened legal action against his ex-wife, according to Express Tribune.
However, in her latest interview, Kim said she’s better able to communicate effectively with the 49-year-old rapper when it comes to North’s music.
“And with her, since it’s more music-related, that is something that her dad and I have better communication about,” Kim said.
She added that they ensure they are “aligned” and that North is only permitted to take part in projects they both approve of.
