Cliché: I read that you were originally born in London and moved to NYC eight years ago. What made you decide to move to the city?
Amy Newton: I was ready for a change of scenery and really wanted to try living abroad. As I grew up in London, I had visited Europe many, many times, so I wasn’t interested in living there. NYC was attractive to me as it was a big, metropolitan city, yet still very different from London—and that’s what I wanted.
Did this move inspire your Spring collection about NYC?
I’m actually inspired by NYC every day. Visiting different neighborhoods and seeing the diversity of styles across each neighborhood is so interesting to me. This is not something that you see in most major cities.
When creating the line, did you have your own personal style in mind, or did you create clothes for a certain type of person?
I based it on my own personal style. That was the reason I designed the line in the first place. I couldn’t find city chic silhouettes with the type of cultural prints that I wanted (especially at a reasonable price).

Pieces of the collection represent different neighborhoods in NYC. Which look did you have the most fun creating?
For Spring 2016, the most fun look is the Brooklyn Midi Skirt and the Downtown Crop Top. I have been having a lot of fun with creating interesting separates lately.
Do you have a favorite piece from the collection?
I love every piece with the metro print (which is the white print). If you are not a person that really wears prints, the jumpsuit is great, as it has just a hint of flavor in the back without being overpowering. I try to give all woman the opportunity to wear CULTRO.
Any ideas yet on what your next collection will be?
Fall 2016 is influenced by the Caribbean, based on a recent trip I made to DR. The colors will be a collection of warm hues with a few cool hue accents, combined with modern silhouettes. The collection will represent the beautiful ocean view, the caribbean jungle, and the movement of the water. As always, the prints will be unexpected, vibrant, and fit for any modern, city woman. Stay tuned!
Since it’s a new year, what do you hope to accomplish by the end of 2016?
I hope that CULTRO will be available in a lot of stores across the country by the end of 2016.
