If you want a glimpse into the mind of Frankie Rodriguez, look no further than the arts. He was nourished by creativity. “The arts have definitely shaped me into the person I am today,” he says. “I always had an interest in music and theater as a kid, but I really didn’t understand the impact that would have until much later. Keeping busy with theater in high school definitely kept me out of trouble.” The stage became his main muse. That sense of euphoria is incomparable. “Every aspect of theater excites me. I love the costumes, sets, wigs, and makeup (and that’s what I love about watching theater). Getting to do it is a whole other story. The best way to describe this is it feels like a roller coaster – such an adrenaline rush!” As a queer actor himself, Frankie is honored to play Carlos, the first openly gay character in the Disney High School Musical franchise, in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. “It means a lot! Obviously, it was a big win and an amazing opportunity for me. I also feel like it was a win for anyone who had waited so long to see themselves represented on that screen.” Fan reaction has been accordingly exuberant. The writers and Frankie are reliable shepherds. “One thing I loved about working on HSMTMTS is the creatives’ goal to not just do the thing, but to do it right. We were so excited to share a story of true queer authenticity at all times.”
Inspired by the joy of painting his nails on IG Live, Frankie launched a new nail line, Freeland. “Freeland is my baby! It’s been a year of pulling everything together and I came out with five beautiful, vibrant colors that make up the birthday collection!” We should all be thrilled to seize each day. “Life is so short and it comes at you really fast. So, why not soak up every moment you get and have fun being the best version of yourself? Whatever that means to you!” Frankie wants the wearers of his polish to feel “happy, excited, fun, and free! Free to be themselves!” He will keep focusing all of his energy on his baby. “Right now, Freeland has most of my attention.
