The latest addition to the DCTV universe, Supergirl, premiered in the Fall 2015 season starring Melissa Benoist as the titular character, along with Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, Jeremy M. Jordan, and Calista Flockhart. There were a number of conflicts in the first season of Supergirl. From Astra and Non and the constant threat of Myriad (imagine Invasion of the Body-Snatchers meets the Star Trek episode “Dagger of the Mind”), to Green and White Martians, to a long-dead father that wasn’t actually dead (Project Cadmus!), here are three reasons why you should be watching Supergirl.
New Additions
There are a few new characters premiering in season two. The most talked about character is obviously Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman. Although Superman was seen in season one (James called him in to help Kara defeat Reactron, for example), his face was never shown, but now they are finally putting a face to the boots. Then there’s Sharon Leal as Miss Martian/M’gann M’orzz, Katie Mcgrath as Lena Luthor, and Floriana Lima as Maggie Sawyer.
Crossovers
As it is part of the DCTV Universe, that means that there will be crossovers with other DCTV shows (Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow). The first crossover on Supergirl was in episode 18 of season one, titled “World’s Finest.” When Barry accidentally travels to Earth 3, he and Kara team up to defeat Livewire and Silver Banshee in exchange for helping him return home. Kara and Barry work really well together. Seeing how they work together and their reactions to each other’s worlds was really cute and funny (for example, when Barry tried to take a photo in front of Kara’s spaceship). The thing that’s most exciting about crossovers is seeing how the different characters would work together. For example, looking at the conflict between Barry and Oliver or Oliver and Kara because of their different attitudes (bright/happy vs dry/dark), or seeing how Iris, Kara, James and Clark interact from a journalism standpoint.
Cat Grant
Kara’s (or Keira, as she’s known for calling her) boss and Cat’s dry wit and observations are some of my favorite parts of the show. Like when she found Kara and Barry’s superhero alter egos, for example. Only J’onn’s shapeshifting changed Cat’s mind about it being Kara. (Though I still wonder whether she really believes Kara isn’t Supergirl or if she just pretends to.) And in “World’s Finest,” where she explains her reasons for being Barry to be The Flash: “Oh please. Barry shows up. The Flash shows up. And he was so unfailingly charming and nice that he had to enter be a superhero or a mormon.” But my favorite Cat moment happened in 1×17, when, after finding out that Siobhan, her former assistant and the previously named Silver Banshee, had sent an email from Kara’s computer basically saying how Kara “really feels about her.” When Winn and Cat basically expose her as being the one who wrote the email, Cat tells her: “I regret having fired you the first time. I wish I could fire you again. With feeling.”
