Elena Sanchez Hunts Down a Killer in “Bone Face”

Elena Sanchez may be cool under pressure, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t a perfectionist. “When my pulse races at work, it’s right before a big stunt,” she explains. “Not so much because I’m excited, but because I want to get it right. I used to be a competitive gymnast, and it reminds me of how my pulse would race right before my beam or uneven bar routine. I just wanted to do a good job and not fall!” The actress and stuntwoman routinely has to pinch herself. It’s a thrill for the kid inside all of us. “I think it’s wild that I get to play ‘make-believe’ for a living. And on top of that, some of the stunts I’ve gotten to do are just super fun things that you would have been forbidden from doing as a child, or things that make you go, ‘I can’t believe this is considered work.’ And I’ve always enjoyed watching a good action movie or thriller, and getting to be a part of making them now is a dream come true.”

Her latest project, Bone Face, is a bonafide head scratcher.  “It’s a murder mystery where I play a deputy alongside Jeremy London as the sheriff, and after responding to a horrible multiple homicide, our investigation brings us into a diner filled with an eclectic group of patrons. We soon realize that one of them must be the killer, but we don’t know who it is, so we spend the rest of the film trying to figure that out.” Jeremy London has become a routine – but never predictable – part of her art.  “This was my third movie with Jeremy (and I have since done a fourth)! Jeremy is really great to work with. He’s become a good friend, and working with a friend always makes the experience so much more fun. He’s a fantastic actor and he’s been doing this a long time, so he’s a pro. I know he’s going to come prepared and bring an interesting take to whatever character he’s playing, and I’ve enjoyed getting to share that with him.”

Viewers can expect plenty of adrenaline. “I hope that what captivates audiences is what captivated me when I first read the script—the fact that it’s a ‘whodunnit.’ I love a good murder mystery film. I love following the plot and trying to figure out who the culprit is, through all the twists and turns that arise.” The film centers around a queasy take on a nostalgic staple of Americana. “About 80% of the movie takes place in the diner. It’s where Jeremy and I suspect that the killer is, so we lock the place down and start an investigation while we are waiting for backup to arrive. Lindsay Anne Williams (our co-producer and production designer) did an amazing job of turning an empty space into a beautiful diner. I’d definitely stop there for a meal if I was driving by!” Elena has full confidence in her own detective chops. “I think my investigative skills would be most useful. I’ve always been good at researching things, and I’m German, so I’m very meticulous. I can’t hurt a fly though, so none of the cool action skills I’ve picked up over the years would help—unless we’re talking about climbing things, I’d be good at that!” Every case does involve climbing to a conclusion! Bone Face is now streaming on Apple TV.
