Today we celebrate Washington’s birthday aka President’s Day, a federal holiday held on the third Monday of February that honors presidents of the United States. But it isn’t clear as to why the federal government recognizes today as Washington’s birthday when it is actually on the 22nd. The strange thing about President’s Day is:
1. There is no universal agreement on the actual name of the holiday.
2. There is no universal agreement on which presidents are being honored.
3. There is no agreement on something as simple as whether there is an apostrophe in “presidents.” (Washington Post)
Some states honor George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on this day because both their birthdays are in the month of February. Other states honor Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and not Lincoln, but there are states that honor all the presidents.
Although there may be some confusion with the actual holiday, there is no confusion when it comes to the retail market. President’s Day is also a day that retail stores have amazing sales both in-store and online. Some say that the deals you score on President’s Day are better than the ones on Black Friday, and consumers enjoy their day of extra savings. Even though there are disagreements with this holiday, and it is unclear who should be celebrated, I think we can all agree on one thing, the retail therapy is much appreciated. So a huge thank you goes out to all the presidents who have lead this fine country in the past, and to the presidents who will continue to do so in the future.
