Dua Lipa Parts Ways with Filmmaker Romain Gavras’ Before Things Turned Sour’: Unraveling the Celebrity Breakup

Dua Lipa

Do you know that uncomfortable feeling when your love life becomes a hot topic for a crowd? If you were a celebrity like Dua Lipa, you would certainly know. It’s the price of being famous, it seems. The line between the public and the private personas becomes blurred, if there’s any at all. Even when public figures try to draw this line, the public and sometimes the press simply don’t care. After all, the thirst for juicy gossip is never ending.

However, reading about celebrities’ lives can be helpful if mindless gossip is successfully avoided. When celebrities open up about their struggles with issues like PTSD or unreal beauty standards, they can help normal people deal with their own struggles. The same can be said for relationships, career goals, balancing personal and professional lives, and more.

Dua Lipa is no exception. While she brings a brilliant blend of entertainment and captivates her audiences, commonly found on other forms of entertainment, such as blockbuster movies, games like Mega Joker and the most binge worthy series on Netflix. Her music is upbeat and brings a vibrant energy matching most thrilling games too.

She’s also had an interesting personal life, and her recent split from Romain Gavras brings some attention back into her love life. Let’s take a look at their short-lived story.

Under the Spotlight

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa’s love life isn’t a secret, apparently. Indeed, it’s all over the internet: a quick search on Google returns plenty of articles listing all the names. It includes singers (Paul Klein and Jack Harlow), an actor (Aron Piper), a model (Isaac Crew), a TV host (Trevor Noah from The Daily Show), and more recently, the filmmaker Romain Gavras.

Romain Gavras is a known name in the pop industry, producing music videos for M.I.A. and Kayne West. He also dated the British singer and actress Rita Ora. Dua and Gavras were seen together last January after a BAFTA’s party. In February, the couple was once again spotted together, now hand-and-hand, after a fashion show in Paris.

According to an unnamed source, it was just “a summer of love”, and Gavras thought Dua was “a workaholic.” It wasn’t a bitter ending, though, because the relationship was dissolved “before things turned sour.” Despite the “workaholic” label, Dua isn’t willing to compromise her career “for anything or anyone.”

“Singledom”

Who are you when you are alone? Despite her busy schedule, Dua Lipa has had time to find out. Recently, she opened up about her single period on the “Check In” podcast. She broke up with Anwar Hadid back in 2021, after which she went through singledom for quite some time. According to Dua herself, it was a period of intense self-knowledge, the kind of knowledge one hardly gets while with someone else.

Dua Lipa said that many people try to run away from singledom, missing the opportunity to go deeper within themselves. She goes on to say that this time alone can help you discover your needs, what you like and what you don’t. Above all, it’s the perfect opportunity to find out who you are away from the noise and undisturbed by someone else.

Despite her comments about singledom and career-focused attitude, Dua Lipa said she’s “a firm believer in love” during an interview for Elle UK. It seems the example comes from home. She claims that her parents have an excellent relationship and that their example has set the bar high for her. In the same interview, Dua confessed she’s very romantic and “life is too short not to say I love you.”

Professional Accomplishments and Personal Lives

An unnamed source claimed that the filmmaker thinks of Dua as a workaholic. Dua or Gavras haven’t confirmed such a comment. Wild speculations from the media are part of celebrities’ lives, though. Anyway, the Greek-French filmmaker surely isn’t idling. Son of the famous Greek director, Costa Gavras, Romain works quite a lot.

Recently, he signed as director for the Netflix thriller “Athena”, and his cv is long. You can find his name in widely popular music videos, such as “No Church in the Wild” (Frank Ocean, Kanye West and Jay-Z) and “Bad Girls” (M.I.A). Additionally, he’s often involved in ad campaigns for brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton and Powerade. Romain’s award nominations include an MTV Music Video Award and two Grammys for Best Short Form Music Video.

Dua Lipa also has a highly accomplished career. She won three Grammy Awards between 2018 and 2020 and also the American Video Award in 2022. The Grammys were for Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Dance Recording. Dua’s collaboration with Elton John earned the award for Collaboration of the Year in 2022. According to reports, the British pop star is now focusing on her third album.

Dua, Gavras, and Houdini

While none of the parties involved comment publicly about their relationship status, speculations continue. If the break is confirmed, their relationship lasted about eight months. Gavras, 14 years older than Dua Lipa, had recently separated from Rita Ora after a six-month relationship.

Dua’s previous relationship, known to the public, with Anwar Hadid, ended in 2021 due to the frantic schedules of the couple. So, it wouldn’t be the first time the British singer prioritised her career above her love life.

Dua’s latest single, “Houdini,” possibly contains a few hints. The lyrics talk about “the escape artist” who knows when to stay and when to go.” The singer says this song is about “staying connected to yourself” and “knowing your worth.” Is it a reference to their breakup? Nobody knows.

The singer’s third album is expected to come out in 2024. It’s not uncommon for pop artists to delay their releases, but it’s undoubtedly uncommon for Dua Lipa. The 27-year-old artist is strictly organised about her schedule.

Can we expect hints about her relationship with Gavras in the next album? Confessional albums have become common in the pop scene. The list is long: Madonna, Adele, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and so on. Yet, Dua Lipa seems to refuse to follow the same path. She says she’s not that open about her personal life, and it would be a weird way to analyse her music. Yet, the singer claims the next album will be “more personal.”

What has actually happened between Dua Lipa and Romain Gavras? Is it worth sacrificing personal life for professional ambitions? The facts are only relevant to them, but their example triggers a relevant discussion.
