Lauren Laverne: The star of BBC 6 Music fell into a media career from the world of music. Laverne was part of the band Kenickie, formed during her time at City of Sunderland College, and tasted moderate success, with four top 40 hits and a top ten album. Her entertaining interviews saw her snapped up to present satellite TV shows before eventually working her way to the mainstream and radio, where she’s flourished on 6 Music as it fended off the threat of closure to become a cherished part of the BBC lineup.
Pamela Anderson: The Baywatch beach didn’t always beckon for this blonde bombshell. Pamela’s first brush with fame actually came from the fact that she was Canada’s ‘centennial baby’ – the first child born on July 1, 1967, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the country. Her fame in adult life began, somewhat bizarrely, at a Canadian Football League game in Vancouver. Caught wearing a Labatt’s beer t-shirt on the big video screen she was then escorted to the field to a rapturous applause, picked up a modelling contract and was propelled on to television screen, first on sitcom Home Improvement and then later her iconic role as CJ Parker in Baywatch.
Evangeline Lilly: The star of Lost, and now several films, was simply walking through the streets of Kelowna in British Columbia when a modeling agency handed her a business card. She wasn’t keen but took the job and money to pay for her education and, after small roles in adverts and non-speaking television parts, bagged her part in Lost.
Jeremy Edwards: Not sure what to do when you’ve got a degree? Hollyoaks and Holby City star Jeremy Edwards certainly wasn’t after bagging a qualification in Politics and Public Administration from Manchester Metropolitan University. His pre-television jobs list reads like a page from Jobs Today. He was an accountant, worked in the canteen at Reading railway station, was briefly a merchant banker, did some work as a fashion model and delivered burgers on roller skates in Soho. Still, he proved it was worth trying out a few career options, going on to appear in two of the nation’s best-loved soaps as well as featuring in Celebrity Big Brother, Dancing on Ice and even a series of pantomimes.
Lacey Turner: The Eastenders star could have almost literally fallen into her job. At her family home in Hertfordshire she could see part of the set for Albert Square from her bedroom window. As a result, young Lacey then wanted to join Eastenders but dismissed her acting as a hobby, even after parts in an advert and a children’s TV show, which propelled her into the BBC One soap. She still couldn’t quite grasp how something she did for fun became a job, telling the Daily Record: “I never set out to be an actress and sort of fell into it accidentally and enjoyed it. I still don’t know what I’m doing now, just going with the flow really. It was a hobby and I loved doing it, then it became a job.”
