Lorde wants the “Green Light”
During the impatient rumblings of “Where the heck is she,” on March 2nd, Lorde released “Green Light” from the upcoming album, Melodrama. First Lana’s movie poster and this album name? The song is probably the most upbeat and dance-pop version we’ve ever seen from Lorde: “I hear sounds in my mind…brand new sounds in my mind.” Yes, we hear it too!
The song reminiscences a lost love, with all the cards for continuing a secret relationship: “We order different drinks at the same bars/I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth/She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a damn liar.”
Something I noticed about Lorde’s songs, is that she likes to use teeth as a symbol or a metaphor for something negative or shallow. In “Green Light,” these teeth are rumors that could get out,“Hope they bite you/Thought you said that you would always be in love/But you’re not in love, no more/Did it frighten you, How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?” These rumors in turn are the truth, negatively affecting someone who doesn’t want to face the truth of genuinely having feelings for someone. Near the end, we hear Lorde’s desperate longing for that ‘green light,’ that they’d come to love her after that night out dancing.
