With her single and music video, “Wrapped in Black,” out now, we took some time to hear more from Aly Berry. Read below to learn more about Aly Berry, the story behind her single, and what’s to come.
Hi Aly Berry! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Aly is just a shortened version of my name. Berry is my last name…genuinely, so my name is Aly Berry.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I was born up north near Sheffield – my family still lives there. I moved to London when I was 18, and am still based in London to work on and commit myself to my dreams.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
It’s all that I’ve ever wanted. I started writing songs when I was very young and playing the piano. So, the dream stuck with me growing up.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
I always wrote as I said, dealing with a lot of things in my life and past, I always find writing a way to cope and get my emotions out. I’ve lost count of how many journals I have and songs I’ve written on pieces of paper or my phone notes.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
I describe my music genre as “moody” Blues combined with Jazz. So, I guess it’s something new. Very me.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I just love writing. I’m a bit of a movie geek. I love art. Anything creative really.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
My hero is always Amy Winehouse. But, I also take inspo and am a huge fan of Jillian Banks, and then Lil Peep…all very different music genres, but all very raw and real music.
Who would you like to collaborate with?
My dream music collaboration would be with Jillian Banks.
What are some of your future music career goals?
I just want to be recognised to the point that I can tour, and share my music and what I want to say.
Now onto your release, “Wrapped in Black.” What inspired this song?
Ah, a situation I went through which is personal to me…but also mental health.
What is “Wrapped in Black” about in your own words?
It relates to mental health for me. But for any listener, it can have a different meaning depending on the listeners situation or emotions at the time.
How did the music video for “Wrapped in Black” come about? What was your vision for the video?
I wanted to kind of have a 60’s runaway bride vibe, mixed with a bit of grunge. I made the vision and the amazing people that I worked with made it happen.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from “Wrapped in Black?”
There’s no specific message. It means to them whatever they feel when they listen.
What’s one of your proudest moments of your music career so far?
I wouldn’t say I have a proudest moment. I’m just proud of myself for sticking with it and working hard.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you’ve learned so far?
Trust yourself and believe in yourself more than anyone else. Don’t get distracted, keep focused. Hard work does pay off, and things will always get better.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects that we should be on the lookout for?
I am working on a lot within myself and within music. Will be coming soon…you’ll have to wait and see haha.
