What You Need to Know for Finding a High Quality Sweater

High Quality Sweater

Today we want to share tips for finding a high quality sweater. Everyone needs to have at least one good sweater and a good jumper to really keep them warm. There are some pretty iconic sweaters out there, like the cable knit from When Harry Met Sally, you have the ugly Christmas sweaters, the sweater from The Big Lebowski, Fred Rogers, Freddy Krueger, you name it.

All are pretty iconic sweaters and perceived to be high quality, too. But what about nowadays? Can you even get a good sweater? While it seems pretty easy when it comes to finding a winter coat, it’s just not like that when it comes to sweater shopping. So, how can you even find a good sweater? What do you need to look for? Well, here’s everything you need to know!

Why is Sweater Quality Going Downhill?

Let’s face it: sweaters aren’t what they used to be. In fact, sweaters are garbage quality nowadays. While it’s important to note that not all sweaters are experiencing a decline in quality, most folks have observed a general trend in recent years of the quality. Yes, basically, most clothes are going downhill, but even when you buy an expensive sweater from an expensive brand, even the quality of that goes downhill.  There are things like these that affect it:

  • Fast fashion and cheaper materials
  • Quantity over quality
  • Craftmanship dying

Overall, it just seems like this is something that’s dying, almost like the art itself is dying when it comes to high-quality sweaters. Even at thrift stores, there’s such a markup you’re spending about as much on a new sweater.

Is it still possible, even nowadays, to find a good sweater? Absolutely! Whether you’re into the oversized sweaters look, cable knit/ fishermen sweaters, cashmere, or basically anything to your liking, there are still ways to buy these and know that they’ll still last. So, with that said, here are some things to look into when it comes to finding a high-quality sweater.

The Material Matters

So, one thing you really need to keep in mind is the type of material since this greatly influences the comfort and durability of a sweater. Ideally, you’re going to want to consider the following popular options:

-Merino Wool: Known for its softness, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties.

-Cashmere: Luxuriously soft and lightweight, providing excellent insulation.

-Cotton: Comfortable and breathable, suitable for various seasons.

-Alpaca or Mohair: Offer warmth without weight, ideal for colder climates.

Basically, natural materials are always best when it comes to sweaters; they help better with warmth, breathability, and sustainability, too. Nowadays, mass-produced sweat is made of rayon and polyester.

The Fit and Style

So, you’re always going to want to think about the fit; it needs to appear high quality and complement your appearance. So, it’s best to choose a sweater that complements your body shape altogether. Honestly, it’s entirely up to you whether you prefer a relaxed, oversized look or a more fitted silhouette; make sure it’s comfortable and suits your style. As for the neckline, it’s the same since it’s going to be based on your preference (and occasion), but this should complement your appearance, too.

The Construction

Alright, so this is where it might actually get challenging because the average person isn’t going to know much about it. But if you can get a general idea about this, then it’s going to become a lot easier to get this going. So, for starters, you’ll need to do a seam check. When it comes to this, you should try to check for stitching and secure seams. Loose threads or irregular stitching may indicate lower quality. Again, regular people don’t know about this, but if you have this knowledge, it’ll drastically help you out. Another thing to note is the knit density since a tight-knit usually means it’s less prone to snags.

Consider the Brand Reputation

Sometimes, all you really need to know is the brand itself. There are some companies that are just known for their incredible sweater quality, while others are known for their poor quality. So, usually, you can have pretty high expectations if you decide to go this route. So, be sure to look for reputable brands known for their quality craftsmanship and use of premium materials. But also think about customer reviews since these can provide valuable insights.

Check for Pilling

You’ll be better off doing this one at a store. So, you’ll want to rub the sweater gently to check for small fabric balls known as pills. A high quality sweater is less likely to pill excessively.
