New Year, New You: How to Discover Your Unique Style

New Year, New You: How to Discover Your Unique Style

Although you can make changes and set a goal for yourself any time of the year, January 1st is a perfect day to kick off a plan to discover your unique style. Even if you’ve had the same style your entire life or only for the past several years, there’s nothing wrong with switching things up a little. Guys, don’t worry if you’re unsure of where to begin. Our tips can help get you started in an easy and manageable way.

Dress for Your Body Type

The five body types for men are oval, triangle, inverted triangle, trapezoid and rectangle. It’s important to determine your body type to have a good base of what could work and what might not. For instance, consider structured blazers if you have a rectangular body shape. Get them professionally tailored so they’ll look like they were made for your body to emphasize what you want. To finish the upper part of your outfit, consider a black T-shirt and custom gold jewelry.

Dress for Your Environment

Where you go should influence what you wear, but there are exceptions. For example, if you’re going to your kid’s baseball game while wearing a suit because you came right from work, that’s perfectly acceptable. However, if you walk into a work meeting while sporting sweatpants because you were running late from the gym, but your office has a no-sweats atmosphere, that will likely be an issue.

Always be prepared for wherever you’re going to be, even if that means you have to keep a change of clothes at work. You might also want to have a few spare outfits in the trunk of your car in case you spill coffee on your shirt or have another wardrobe malfunction. This provides a way to be ready for anything.

Dress for Your Lifestyle

Some live one type of lifestyle, while others maintain a combination. For instance, maybe you live by the ways of a Bohemian, or you’re more a combination of healthy and corporate. When you stay true to who you are and what you love, it can be easy to gravitate toward one or more types.

Let’s say you’re all about an urban lifestyle. A black scoop-neck T-shirt with a gold Cuban link chain and relaxed-fit jeans could be a hot outfit. Men who spend their time at the beach year-round might consider khakis and a white button-up.

It’s obvious to everyone around you when you sport the styles that make you most comfortable and reflect your true self. Your confidence will radiate through.

Find a Style Icon

Having a style icon, whether they’re famous or a noncelebrity, can be a great source of fashion inspiration. If yours is a celebrity, it doesn’t have to be someone still alive. For example, maybe you’re a fan of James Dean’s style from the 1950s or prefer Michael B. Jordans modern looks.

What the style icon wears doesn’t necessarily have to reflect what you currently wear, but maybe how you would like to start dressing. For instance, if you’re typically a T-shirt- and sweats-type of guy but want to model more formal clothing, look for a style icon that represents what you’d like to move toward. It’s typically easy to find exact clothing matches or, at the very least, dupes.

Play With Color

Many men will shy away from color in favor of neutrals. There’s nothing wrong with that if that’s your thing and what you love. However, if you don’t wear more colorful pieces because you’re nervous about what others will think about your appearance, you may be surprised at how fantastic it could look.

This isn’t to say you have to dive right into vibrant patterns or sporting pieces with hues resembling several brighter shades from a box of crayons. Start with low-key basics, like a blue button-up for spring or a burnt orange T-shirt for fall.

Experiment With Accessories

Treat yourself to some accessories for the new year. Opt for ones you know you’ll likely consistently wear, such as trendy silver earrings, a gold watch or a cashmere scarf for when the temperatures drop. Consider accessories as investment pieces. Versatile accessories make it effortless to change up even the most basic outfits and provide a serious boost of style.

Don’t Be Afraid to Stand Out

It’s easy to buy clothes that aren’t attention-grabbing, but buying pieces you know will turn heads takes courage. Wear what you love and what makes you comfortable, and you’ll carry confidence with every step.

Let’s say you’re more of a fan of old-school styles than modern fashion, but you’re worried about what other people will think. This is when you need to consider what makes you happy instead of what others think you should wear.

One of the best things about modern fashion is that it’s now a big hodgepodge of styles where people feel more confident stepping out in whatever they feel like modeling. Anyone who truly cares about you will want you to be your authentic self and nothing less.
