Over the last century, Converse Sneakers, otherwise known as Chuck Taylors, have become a fashion staple that refuses to go out of style. Unlike other sneakers, Converse have always maintained a particular look, even though the vast range of designs makes many pairs different. So, like the iconic ‘little black dress’ they remain classic yet versatile pieces.

According to an interview conducted by money saving website Couponbox with sneaker expert Elizabeth Semmelhack, it’s difficult to identify exactly why Converse sneakers transitioned from a basketball shoe to a fashion icon. Still, Semmelhack – the senior curator at Toronto’s BATA Museum and author of Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture – believes that it occurred during the 90s and early-00s, when the hipster trend was born.
A decade later, both Converse and hipster fashion remain popular, so we thought we’d take a look at three of the best ways you can style your sneakers. Whether you suit the traditional high-tops or ‘Oxford’ low-tops, we suggest those with average or shorter legs stick to the latter. Those of you blessed with long legs can usually get away with wearing either, but styling them is up to you. Here are some tips that are sure to help out.
Jeans
First and foremost, the best companion for your Converse is a pair of skinny jeans or leggings. You can wear them tucked in like in the video above or roll up the hem for a cool cuffed look. Either way, you’re bound to look chilled out and ready for anything. Alternatively, you can never go wrong with a comfy pair of boyfriend jeans especially if you keep them rolled up above the ankle. As for your top half, try not to clash prints if you have patterned Converses on. Instead, stick with a classic white tee or a plain chunky knit to complete the look.
High-Waisted Shorts

A few years ago, high-waisted shorts made such a successful comeback that there’s a chance you probably still have a couple of pairs in your wardrobe. Whilst other shorts aren’t for everyone, high-waisted shorts can turn almost anyone into a sexy pin-up model in no time. So, by pairing them with your Converse you’ll be creating the ultimate cool and sultry outfit. Even if you need to wear tights to brave the cold. Wear a band tee with a plaid shirt or baggy cardigan on top and you’re all set.
A Dress

Although it may seem like a brave choice, you can absolutely wear your favorite dresses with Converse. There is just one rule: The dress’ hem should be a few inches above the knee. This is because a long dress, especially if it doesn’t have a side slit, paired with some Converses will make your legs look shorter than they actually are. Instead, balance your figure out by wearing a mini, shift, tank or jumper dress. This same rule applies to skirts, so you have plenty of options.
Of course, there are plenty of other ways you can style Converse. But these items are the ones you’re most likely to have in your closet. Whether you add other accessories, like scarves and jewelry, is up to you – after all, style is personal.
