Cliché: What was it like growing up in a musical family?
Mahogany LOX: Growing up in a musical family was really inspiring to me. When I was very young my grandpapa would have Motown Holiday parties at his home where my fam and I would perform. That was fun!
As I got older, I was heavily influenced by my brother 8ky and Uncle Redfoo when they created their group LMFAO. I literally grew up with LMFAO from day one and loved every minute of it!
Did you expect “Take Your Man” to blow up as much as it did?
Not really. I thought it would do well but I had no idea that it would have done what it did and what it’s still doing.
Have you enjoyed all of the sounds (TikTok videos) people are making with it?
Yes! It’s hard to believe that over 1.8 million TikTok videos were made using the “Take Your Man” sound. I love all the videos. Everyone is so creative!
Tell us about your new song, “SIKE.” You’ve said that “SIKE” is about confidence, but also about letting people know that it’s OK to feel things. How do you balance confidence with the insecurities that everyone naturally has?
I do feel it’s natural to have insecurities. But I feel to overcome the insecurities, it really comes down to you loving yourself. If you know you’re a good person, it doesn’t matter what anyone says about you if it’s negative. Be confident in knowing that you are beautiful and go forward and share your gifts with the world!
You have almost 10,000,000 followers across social media and have spoken out about all the hate that you receive. How do you deal with all that negativity without letting it affect you?
I actually don’t get a lot of hate. But if I do, I completely ignore it. I focus and concentrate only on positive energy and love. This is what I want to share and give to the world. I want everybody to be happy, safe and loved!
What advice do you have for people dealing with hate or harassment on social media?
If someone is continuously throwing negativity your way, block or mute them! There’s no reason for you to have to read it!
What message do you hope that fans will take away from your music?
I want the LOXSmiths to feel confident and to feel like the baddies they are when they listen to my music!
How are you entertaining yourself during quarantine?
Lots and lots of Netflix shows, writing songs and practicing my DJ sets! Also, my best friend Zak and I are doing a themed Instagram photo competition on each of our individual Instagram’s where people can vote on which photo is their favorite!
