For all you avid Beyoncé fans out there you now have the chance to study the Queen Bey and even receive college credit at Rutgers. A course titled “Politicizing Beyoncé” is being offered at the New Brunswick, New Jersey, college, but the class isn’t about the pop star’s political views. A doctoral student and lecturer in the college’s Department of Women and Gender Studies, Kevin Allred, told the college paper Rutgers Today that the class will explore race, gender and sexuality in America via Beyoncé music.

“She certainly pushes boundaries,” Allred says. “While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona.” (nydailynews) Allred says that the class can expect to to discuss topics such as Queen Bey’s brand, skin-baring outfits and risque performances as her alter ego Sasha Fierce.
Beyoncé now joins her successful rapper husband Jay-Z, who also has a college course dedicated to him. The course is titled “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Theodicy of Jay-Z”, and is offered at Georgetown University. Congrats to this musical power couple on their continuous accomplishments, and for all you college students who need to take a Women and Gender Studies course be sure to study Beyoncé at Rutgers and expand your mind while doing so.
