Alan Chikin Chow’s clearly defined ambition was sparked by his childhood. The YouTube icon is constantly innovating. “I loved Disney growing up, and it’s my vision to build Disney for the next generation,” he says. “As a traditionally trained film/TV actor, it’s amazing to me how social media has changed how we tell stories nowadays. When YouTube first began, no one could imagine how giant it would become, and I aspire to be a creative who evolves with the changing landscape to build a legendary brand.” Social media stars have many folks reviewing their content, but Alan’s most important feedback comes straight from home. “My test of content is truly my mom. I started making videos to make my mom laugh, and she’s still the best indicator of viral content. My mom and I are very different in our taste, age, and sensibilities. If I can make a video that makes both her and I laugh, I know I’ve hit a huge demographic between her and I and everyone in between.” Mom knows best! He is now the number one most-watched YouTube Shorts creator, boasting more than 30 million subscribers.
Dazzling statistics aside, uplifting people remains his top priority. “I am so grateful that my success began when I started to shift my mindset to bringing joy to others. My mission is to unite a universal audience through laughter and storytelling, and I’m beyond grateful that billions of people (literal billions – we get 1-2 billion views a month!) resonate with that mission.” Alan has witnessed the soothing impact of his content. “I once went live with a follower who told me that her mom was in the hospital and she watched my videos with her mom as a form of relief during a hard time. Laughter is so important, and it brings us healing during hard times. I want to continue to bring that feeling to millions of people around the world.”
Humor is incredibly powerful in its simplicity. We connect through shared happiness. “Laughter reminds us what we all have in common. It’s beautiful that a 52-year-old man in Nebraska can find the same video funny as a 9-year-old girl in India. We’re all human, we all relate to each other on so many levels despite our differences, and comedy reminds us of this.” Alan enjoys using his platform to amplify other AAPI artists. “I have a truly diverse team of all backgrounds and identities, and I’m grateful to have a platform where I can amplify underrepresented voices and actors. My actors and my team represent this globally diverse mission. It brings me such joy to give back to the community that has supported me from the beginning.” His ultimate goal is bridging the gap between content creation and traditional Hollywood. “The way stories are being told is evolving. YouTube, social media, and streaming have transformed the media landscape. Entertainers who can adapt to shifting technological innovation, while still employing storytelling elements that have resonated since the beginning, will be champions in the end.” He intends to be the nucleus of a worldwide movement bonded together by the thrill of similarities. “I use my influence to unify humans for a positive mission. My team and my followers all stand for the unity of humanity, and it’s my goal to continue to share that mission with billions across the globe.” With each giggle, we all realize we are much closer together than we might believe.
