Singer Ed Sheeran serenades teenage fan battling cystic fibrosis. Triona Priestly had been battling cystic fibrosis since childhood and her final wish was to be serenaded by her favorite singer Ed Sheeran. When Triona’s health took a dramatic turn early last week, her family and friends logged on to Twitter and posted tweets directed at Sheeran with the hashtag #SongForTri. By Sunday night the hashtag was trending on Twitter, with thousands of users trying to contact the singer. The Twitter campaign #SongForTri became so popular that Sheeran’s management contacted Priestley’s friend Lucy Hanlon to arrange a call between the girl and her idol.
According to Daily Mail, “Ed rang Triona and personally sang “Little Bird” to her as she took her last breaths,” Hanlon wrote on Facebook, “Triona left us listening to her idol surrounded by all the people who loved her. People’s respect is incredible. We would like to thank everyone.” After a long hard fight with her illness, the 15 year old Dublin teen passed away on Sunday in the company of the people who loved her most following the serenade. Shortly after Sheeran heard the news of Triona’s passing, he tweeted: “Rest in peace Triona, so heartbreaking x”.
This story truly touched my heart, and it showed me how amazingly powerful social networking really is. It is good to know that media icons such as Ed Sheeran really care about their fans. R.I.P. Triona Priestley.
