With the success of Jane the Virgin, on-set stylists Michelle Rene Elam, who is the Department Head Hair, and Tena Parker Baker, who is the Key Hair, were kind enough to share their backstage secrets for achieving some of the cast’s signature hairstyles!
Gina Rodriguez/Jane by Michelle Rene Elam
Gina Rodriguez plays Jane, who likes to keep her style natural and simple. After all, her life is full of events and hard work; however, by no means does Jane have a dull personality. She is a young and dynamic woman always on the lookout for fun. To keep Jane feeling and looking lively, it’s important to maintain the upkeeps for her lovely tresses. The way in which Michelle Rene Elam goes about taking care of Rodriguez’s character is by using heat protectant sprays, particularly White Sands Liquid Texture Firm Thermal Styling Spray. Following suit, Elam uses Paul Mitchell Pro Tools Neuro Unclipped 1.25” Styling Cone to set Jane’s beautiful and bountiful mane, which often involves Elam using her T3 Singlepass styling iron to flatten the roots and keep them close to Jane’s head.
Elam is fully equipped and prepared for any hair stressing situation because she lays out multiple possible situations that may be encountered.
“Maintaining her hair through the day requires different options depending on the humid or dry weather, how long the day of work is, and how many hair changes we have,” said Elam.
The products that Elam keeps nearby include Moroccanoil treatment oil and White Sands Orchids Oil, which control the unruliness while also giving hair an extra shine. On days when Jane’s hair has really gone through its course, Elam knows that Oribe Supershine Light Moisturizing Crème is what’s needed. Elam also uses Aerogel Styling Spray or Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium to seal Jane’s hair. As for hairstyles, such as a ponytail, Elam uses a wooden dry brush with hairspray to keep everything in check. To wrap everything up, Elam keeps in mind that Rodriguez’s mane is – what she refers to as – “very particular of shampoos.” So naturally, wherever Elam goes she is sure to carry Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Seaweed Bath Co. Balancing Argan Shampoo with her.
