Disney Channel actress Ashley Tisdale has been open with the world about her life as a mother, as she and her husband, Christoper French, share two children. Recently, the former “The Suite Life of Zach & Cody” star became vulnerable about her experience with postpartum depression, revealing she tried several times to divorce her husband amid the challenging time.
Ashley Tisdale Opens Up About Wanting A Divorce Amid Postpartum Depression
Tisdale and French welcomed their first daughter, Jupiter, in March 2021. Recently, while appearing on his new mental health-focused podcast, “Recovering,” the actress shed light on how postpartum depression impacted not only her life but their marriage after having their baby girl.
She recalled, “The hormonal stuff is the hardest part because you’re trying your hardest.” Tisdale then described the experience, saying, “And I’m like, ‘I know what to do and why am I still feeling this way?’ And it was just like very intense.”
After that, the mom of two began to discuss how the condition disrupted her marriage with French, admitting that, at times, she suggested they go their separate ways.
According to her, “Obviously you dealt with a lot of that, and we had difficulty, you know, during that first year.” From there, Tisdale credited French’s “grounded” nature with keeping them from divorcing, saying, “I tried to divorce you so many times, but you’re so grounded and calm and knew to just let it blow over.”
She Then Opened Up About Discovering She Had Postpartum Depression
Tisdale continued her appearance on the podcast by stating that she didn’t initially receive a diagnosis for postpartum depression, meaning she went some time without knowing why she had begun to experience her symptoms.
The 41-year-old actress explained, “My OB was saying like, ‘Oh, you have PMDD [Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder]’ And I’m like, ‘What is that?’ And it’s just like some kind of worse PMS before your period. And it, like, hits you from the two weeks before your period. So you only, like, feel normal for two weeks. And I was like, ‘Well, what do you do for it?’ And she’s like, ‘Nothing. We have nothing to do for that. And I’m sorry.’ And I’m like, ‘What?’”
After that, Tisdale stated that she feared she’d be plagued with her symptoms forever and called her varying moods “horrible.” She then learned that she had postpartum depression around their daughter’s second birthday.
According to her, “She [Tisdale’s doctor] was like, ‘Oh, you had postpartum depression,’ And I was like, ‘What? Like, how did you not know to tell me this?’” Tisdale also said on the podcast that she did not experience the condition with her second child, Emerson, who was born in 2024, reflecting, “It’s pretty cool, though, doing it again and not having that experience.”
