A Different Tune to Dance To

In need of a change of pace? Want something that will shake things up? As is the case in most situations, music can be the answer. Here are some artists, both brand new and who have been around the block before, whose new albums will be just the thing you’re looking for.

Born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, the 16-year old New Zealander’s track “Royals” has snuck up onto the pop charts. The undeniably catchy tune combines solid bass and infectious, almost haunting vocals. Reminiscent of Florence + the Machine and Lana del Rey, Lorde’s first single off her album The Love Club takes a jab at mainstream songs today, critiquing fascination with opulence and extravagant displays of wealth. The lyrics, in particular the chorus, read through a list of things that separate Lorde from the lifestyle portrayed by so many musicians, including ‘gold teeth, Grey Goose, tripping in the bathroom/bloodstains, ball gowns, trashing the hotel room.’

Franz Ferdinand – Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (2013)

The Scottish indie-rock band has returned from a four-year hiatus to release their fourth album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. The new album manages to produce the same sound as the band’s hit “Take Me Out” while offering something intriguing to be discovered for new and old listeners alike. Recently released and just in time to add to your playlist, the single “Right Action” is an upbeat rock tune that perfectly captures the spirit of modern punk revival and indie rock, making it seem as though they picked up right where they left off.

Sara Bareilles – The Blessed Unrest (2013)

A name not unfamiliar to many, Bareilles shows her usual musical style on her latest album The Blessed Unrest. Bareilles offers plenty of soul, heartache, and lessons of love on tracks such as “Manhattan” yet also inspires in her chart-topping single “Brave.” These songs are just some proof that Bareilles can stay true to her upbeat pop and soulful style, and also manage to keep her listeners captivated.
