She may be a Billboard chart-topping artist today, but prior to her career as a singer, SZA may have been on her way to becoming a marine biologist.

Blast From The Past

During the 65th annual Grammys, host Trevor Noah reminded guests and viewers that the songstress was once heading down a career path that was completely opposite to the work she does today.

“This is a woman who almost became a marine biologist and if she had, there would be no theme song for killing your ex,” said Noah during the show. “Please welcome SZA.”

While people in the crowd like Adele, for example, seemed to be left in shock, this isn’t the first time it’s been shared with the public.

SZA’s Love For The Ocean

During a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, SZA — whose given name is Solána Rowe — opened up about her love for the field of science.

“I know that the ocean is changing in a rapid, permanent way,” she said. “I would take six months off just to do entomology and categorize species in the Galapagos or Madagascar — it’s not even a question.”

What Is A Marine Biologist?

According to the UT Marine Science Institute, the profession includes the study of biological oceanography and “the associate fields of chemical, physical, and geological oceanography to understand marine organisms.”

Black Girls And The Ocean

As previously reported by AfroTech, another entertainer has become very familiar with the field after his daughter expressed her interest in the study.

Tracy Morgan previously built his daughter Sonae a 20,000-gallon tank in their backyard after she told him that she not only wanted to learn more about the ocean but that her favorite animal just so happens to be a shark.

“There’s 14 or 15 sharks in there, black tips, white tips,” Morgan said on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” “She wanted to study, so I put like eight tanks in the house and I have the shark tank outside the house.”

Here’s to all the Black girls fascinated with the deep blue sea!
