Cliché: What are your core hair care and/or styling tips for men and women?
Michael Duenas: Always use a conditioner; it is more important than a shampoo. Use the right products for your hair type and look desired.
It’s difficult to duplicate the “salon look” at home. Any suggestions?
It is not difficult if your stylist educates you on how to achieve the look. It may take a few tries to get it right, but following your stylist’s steps and product usage will set you on the right track.
What are the best must-haves at home regarding hair styling products or equipment?
A good mousse is a must. I recommend OSiS Grip by Schwarzkopf Professional—it helps give long lasting hold and sheen to the hair. Mousse is one of the top-used products for any red carpet event and/or photo shoot. A professional blow dryer will change your life; with more power and better heat, your hair will dry faster and healthier. Try the T3 blow dryers—they are incredibly light and quiet.
Is using hair conditioners just as important for men as they are for women?
Yes, conditioners are extremely important to men as well. They help moisturize the scalp and help to prevent dry scalp as well as make the hair more malleable and easier to style.
What about covering gray? How does one avoid that “shoe polish” look men tend to get?
Use a demi-permanent—this will achieve gray blending and help the hair look more natural. Or when using a permanent color, make sure to use a color barrier on the skin—this way the color doesn’t stain the scalp.
What secret styling tips can you give that you do or use on your celebrity clients?
Almost everything is used on dry hair. It’s rare to start a client with wet hair. This speeds up the entire process.
Is anything trending in men or women’s hairstyles for this holiday?
Men’s haircuts are still on trend for clean-cut looks, tight sides, and a polished top, only with a slight disheveled look. I am seeing a lot of braids on women, a lot of braids playing into a soft updo.
What about fun “glitz” to use in the hair for party-time?
When doing an updo, a broach is a good option to spruce up any hairstyle. Even your favorite broach that you wear on your holiday outfit is a perfect accessory for your hair!
Dry cut vs. wet cut? Which is better?
Depends on the hair texture, curly hair should be cut dry, straight hair should be cut wet. Hair is elastic when its wet, so each situation needs to be assessed. A wet cut on straight hair typically has more control for the hair cutter, thus having longer longevity. On curly hair you can see exactly how the hair is going to lie when cut on dry, so there are no surprises.
What key factors come into play when planning to change the image of a celebrity’s hair style?
You always need to assess what the next carrier move is for the client, and why they want the change, like if they have finished all prior projects and can change before the next. Also, it always needs to look good, even when the client does not style it. You never know when they will get a picture snapped!
