5 Essentials for a Smooth Cross-Country Move

5 Essentials for a Smooth Cross-Country Move

Moving across the country is a huge adventure for the whole family, but it can get chaotic and stressful fairly quickly. Packing up what feels like hundreds of boxes and deactivating all your utilities on time can be totally overwhelming. However, with the right preparation methods, you can make the process much smoother. If you plan on moving soon, here are five essentials for making your long-distance move feel more manageable.

1. Protective Packing Supplies

Your belongings will spend hours or even days on the road on the cross-country drive to your new home. When they get jostled around during transport, the chances of fragile items breaking are pretty high. Stock up on sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and other supplies that can protect your stuff from getting destroyed on the road. This is essential if you want all of your belongings to get to your new home in one piece.

2. A Clear Labeling System for Boxes

A strong, clear labeling system makes unpacking easier and less chaotic when you arrive at your new home. With each box clearly marked, you can place everything in the right room from the beginning. On every box, consider writing down the contents and the room it’s meant to go in. This makes organizing your home after the move a breeze.

3. Help from a Trustworthy Moving Company

Trying to move everything by yourself can be expensive and physically draining, especially if you have no experience driving a massive truck. Instead, to make things less stressful, look for a trustworthy cross country moving company that will do the heavy lifting for you. Look for a company that can leave a portable, ideally all-steel storage box with you for you to fill up. Then, they should be the ones to drive that container to your new place.

4. A Suitcase for Your First Night

When you get to your new place, you won’t start unpacking immediately. After such a long drive, you’ll likely want to call it a night and start the hard work tomorrow. However, you’ll realize you have no idea in which box you packed your comfy clothes, toothbrush, and water bottle.

This is why packing one small suitcase with your immediate essentials is a good idea when moving to your new home. Make sure you have toiletries, chargers, pajamas, medications, and any other items you’ll need to settle in on your first night. That way, you won’t have to stress over looking for what you need among dozens of boxes.

5. Utilities and Wi-Fi Scheduled Ahead

Setting up essential services like internet and electricity will be a massive help on your first day in your new home. You’ll be able to settle in quicker. Make it a point to call your new city’s utility companies at least two weeks in advance to get everything activated right when you arrive. That way, you won’t be stuck unpacking in the dark or without Wi-Fi.

Endnote

Planning and executing a long-distance move is hardly ever going to be stress-free. However, with the tools and thoughtful plans above, you can set yourself up for success. Remember, you’re moving your life, not just some boxes. Having all of these essentials with you will be more than worth it. Take a deep breath, plan ahead, and make sure you have these resources for your journey to your new home.
