Black and white, the classic color combination has all been worn at some point in our lives. The important thing to remember is that this minimal combination is universally flattering: the two colors complement each other, and together they complement any skin tone or silhouette. It’s no wonder they say “when in doubt, wear black and white”! This seems to be an unwritten rule in the book of celebrity style, but it’s not one we don’t love! Without further ado, here are 10 celebrities that rocked black and white in 2013:
Who Did Black and White Best in 2013?
Both Scarlett Johansson and Carey Mulligan picked black and white outfits for this year’s Venice Film Festival. Scarlet showed that she knows how to flatter her hourglass silhouette, in a pair of high waist pants, a striped tank and high heel peep toes. The perfectly mixed casual with elegant for her Under the Skin photocall, and we really appreciate it. Carey, on the other hand, showed off her quirky style at the festival by wearing a little black dress with a white collar and T-strap sandals. She accessorized with Tortoiseshell Miu Miu Sunglasses, and wore her hair up, which makes her bone structure shine.
For the Printemps Christmas Decorations Inauguration in November, Gwyneth Paltrow wore a gorgeous Prada dress that we still sometimes think of. The white dress was strapless, fit and flare, and hitting at the knee, with black shiny embellished flowers, a look that suits her. Beyonce kept it simple at the Grammy Awards this year, and it paid off: the Osman black and white jumpsuit looked great on her body, and paired with sandals and geometric bracelets.
Rooney Mara rarely wears anything other than black, white or black and white, so it’s no wonder she seems to have mastered the art of it. Pictured here at Cannes, the actress wore an interesting, architectural dress with pockets and white side panels. Emma Stone also keeps her hands in her pockets, in her Lanvin dress, worn at the premiere of The Croods. Featuring a big bow at the bag, the strapless dress was worn over a white top, and paired with nude heels that made Emma look tall and chic.
These two young actresses have such great style! Chloe Moretz picked up her Next Future Icon at the Elle Style Awards in a striped dress by Stella McCartney, worn with matching striped pointy heels. For the more casual Comic Con, Heilee Steinfeld wore high waist cropped pants with oxfords and a plain white shirt, looking age appropriate and chic.
Sofia Coppola made an appearance at the Crystal & Lucy Awards wearing a simple, sheer dress in black, with a white collar. Her barely-there transparent shoes were an unexpected touch that totally worked. For a Vanity Fair party, the stylish Diane Kruger went for a hot Giambattista Valli high-low dress with plenty of volume, long sleeves and matching Louboutins. With legs like that, the actress looked spotless.
