Ed Letter: Aug/Sept 2015

Is it just me, or does August always seem to sneak up on you? Part of my job as a magazine editor is to think about each month several months in advance (I’ve, technically, been planning for August since April), but still—this year, like every year since I could remember, was the same: hazy July tiptoes on by, and then you wake up one morning from your blissful summer fog only to realize that it is now August and half the summer is gone. Panic ensues as you remember all the things you wanted to do that you haven’t done yet, and thus the Scramble for Last Chances begins.

But September—now, September has always been about starting fresh, getting focused, and planning goals. For some (and thankfully not me anymore), it means a new school year. In this issue, we tried to capture the final days of summer, while also getting you to think ahead. From my experience, this “summer to fall transition period” can either be handled delicately with gentle coaxing and reassurance, or painfully all at once, like ripping off a Band-Aid: “BAM! Now it’s September, and summer’s over. Get back to work.” Here, we try the former.

Over the next 150 pages, we are covering all things from last-minute vacation outfits (p. 31), the best beauty looks to start off the new school year (p. 32), and Betina Lou’s new F/W 2015-16 collection, which, in classic BL fashion, consists of dark colors, button-downs, and plaid (p. 33). We are also looking back on this summer’s massive Warped Tour (p. 157), where our Music Director photographed and interviewed dozens of bands (for some, we are sure this is what heaven sounds like).

We also have interviews with some massively talented—and dare I say Instagram famous—celebrities, including Karrueche Tran, Olivia Holt, Serayah McNeill, and Cody Saintgnue. All of that starts on page 46, and trust me: you won’t want to miss a word of it.

We were also lucky enough to chat with our two gorgeous cover girls (starting on page 106), who are probably looking forward to September more than anyone else: Katherine McNamara, who stars in the Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials film, out September 18, and Grace Gealey from Empire, whose second season begins September 23. Although I was a few episodes late to the Empire craze, it was Gealey’s character I resonated with the most (and by “resonate” I mean fell in love with her wardrobe), so it was an honor to ask her about the new season of Empire, her killer fashion sense, and what it was like growing up in the Cayman Islands.

Now get out there and soak up the last little bit of summer while it’s still here!
