Lea Thompson enjoyed watching Brats, but playfully admits she had one specific issue with it.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, the actress, 63, opens up about appearing in the 2024 documentary film, directed by Andrew McCarthy, and how she was concerned that her husband, Howard Deutch, filmed scenes for the project inside their kitchen amid renovations, despite her ask not to.

“Andrew McCarthy, my husband directed him in Pretty in Pink, so Andrew asked us to do interviews, and I did my interview outside. And I said, ‘Howie, whatever you do, don’t do your interview in the kitchen because we’re remodeling it,’ ” Thompson says.

Still, her husband of 35 years ignored her plea. Thompson continues, “We had taken everything out of the cupboards and put it on the counter, so they’re shooting over 100 different bags of chips and stuff.”

“There’s boxes in the background, and I’m like, ‘What are you thinking?’ ” adds The Chicken Sisters star with a laugh. “Why did the [director of photography] not go, ‘Look at this kitchen. It’s a disaster. Why are we shooting here?’ ”

Brats finds McCarthy, 61, reuniting with Thompson and other fellow ’80s icons Emilio EstevezRob LoweDemi Moore, Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton and more to discuss being a part of the “brat pack” — a group of young actors who took over Hollywood and changed it forever.

Overall, Thompson says she enjoyed watching the film. “I loved it. [Andrew] did a great job,” she tells PEOPLE. “I think he made a smart move by teaming up with the news because there are so many great clips and stuff, which would’ve been impossible to find, or catalog, or get the rights to.”

“There’s so many clips in it that are really, really interesting, especially publicity kind of stuff, and when they were just rolling,” continues the Some Kind of Wonderful star. “Not the stuff that was cut out, but the actual footage.”

Adds Thompson: “[Andrew] was smart to try to get that footage because it’s really interesting, I thought it was really interesting, and I think he did an amazing job. It was a very personal piece of art. I love that.”

Brats is available to stream on Hulu. The first two episodes of Thompson’s latest project, The Chicken Sisters, are currently airing on Hallmark+, with new episodes dropping every Thursday after.
