Can Eddie Redmayne Repeat his 2015 Success at the OscarsIt’s one of the most hotly anticipated and exciting aspects of every year’s Academy Awards – just who will scoop Best Actor at this year’s Oscars? It is, after-all, an incredibly hard category to predict a winner and this year will be no different with all five nominees certainly worthy of the prize.
One of the hottest contenders for the award is British actor Eddie Redmayne who won Best Actor at the awards ceremony last year. The actor, who won numerous awards for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, is becoming one of the most highly sought-after actors in Hollywood and will hit our screens again this November as Newt Scamander in the incredibly anticipated Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. But can he make it two years in a row?

Well there has only ever been five actors who have won the Best Actor prize consecutively – with Tom Hanks being the last for his roles in Forrest Gump and Philadelphia – so the odds aren’t exactly in his favour. However, with such an exceptional performance as a transgender artist in The Danish Girl the 34-year-old certainly has the merit to take the prize.
The main obstacle in Redmayne’s path to a second Oscar will be in the form of Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in The Revenant, a film that is nominated for a hefty 12 Oscars. For years the internet has lovingly mocked the fact that DiCaprio has been nominated a previous five times for the Best Actor Oscar but has been unable, as of yet, to clinch the award. Many people believe this could be DiCaprio’s year, and with the fact that he has just won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in the same role, it is looking positive for his Oscar jinx to finally be broken.
Eyes should also be kept on Michael Fassbender to pull a surprise win for his title role as Steve Jobs. The film itself may have been a box office flop, but it received wide critical acclaim with Fassbender’s co-star Kate Winslet also nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
Indeed Winslet weighed in on the Best Actor debate in an interview with US Weekly saying “you can sort of feel the temperature. It’s probably going to be Leo’s year.” She went on to say, “I think that everyone wants it for him. It would be amazing.”
Leonardo DiCaprio is certainly one of the most popular actors to take the prize with many, like Kate Winslet, feeling this should finally be his year. Whether Winslet’s predication comes true remains to be seen, but it certainly seems that 2016 could be anyone’s year so be prepared for a surprise win.
A list of the nominees:
Bryan Cranston – Trumbo
Matt Damon –
The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio –
