Boygenius confirms it’s going on a hiatus days before the supergroup’s Grammys debut

Boygenius has announced it’s going on hiatus just days before the band makes its Grammys debut as a first-time nominee on Sunday.

The indie band, made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, alluded to the break during a secret show at The Smell — a music venue in Los Angeles — Thursday night, and the news spread like wildfire across the fandom.

@boygeniussource shared an attendee’s video, in which Dacus says “This is our last show, and we’re feeling it,” on X. In a separate video, as the band leads into its last song, Baker corrects the record: “Not ever.”

A representative for the band confirmed boygenius’ hiatus announcement to USA TODAY on Friday.

The trio is nominated in seven categories at this year’s Grammy Awards, including record of the year, album of the year and best alternative music album.

Bridgers, who was previously nominated as a solo artist at the 2021 Grammys, is separately nominated for her collaboration with SZA (who leads with nine nominations this year) on “Ghost In The Machine.”

The band released its debut EP in 2018, garnering a fanbase while not becoming a chart-topper. Meanwhile, the group’s first full-length album, “The Record” — released in March 2023 —debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart last spring.

Amid a busy year for the supergroup, boygenius performed at Coachella Music Festival, played international shows on The Tour, made its “Saturday Night Live” debut and collaborated with decorated actor Kristen Stewart, who directed three of the band’s music videos.

While celebrating “The Record’s” release last year, Baker told Billboard, “It’s been 10 years of me trying to make music with friends and people who care about me, and it’s cool to still be doing it.

“I don’t want it to be a glory-esque, ‘We made it!’ type thing — it’s more complex of a feeling than that. It’s that I still love this in the same way that I did at that moment.”
