Christopher McDonald, who played Sandler’s cocky rival in the first film, added that “fans demand” a sequel.

Adam Sandler may be hitting the links again to revisit one of his most popular movies.

His costar Christopher McDonald, who played Sandler’s cocky rival Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, said in a recent interview that a sequel to the 1996 golf comedy is in the works.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” he told Cleveland radio’s Ken Carman Show. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans demand it, damn it!”

McDonald also said that Shooter is among the three favorite roles he’s had. The character has become one of his most beloved among fans, even though he’s appeared in dozens of films and TV series, including Thelma & Louise, Grease 2, Requiem for a Dream, Secret Invasion, Hacks, Boardwalk Empire, and Ballers.

Christopher McDonald and Adam Sandler in ‘Happy Gilmore’

Representatives for Sandler and Netflix — with whom Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions have a long-standing working relationship — declined to comment.

Sandler co-wrote and played the title role in the original Happy Gilmore, which centers on a former hockey player with anger management problems and an unexpected talent for golf. He joins a golf tour to make money to save his grandmother’s house, with the assistance of ex-pro Chubbs Peterson, played by the late Carl Weathers. Of course, to win the money, Happy has to beat the antagonistic Shooter.

The movie also features appearances from Bob Barker, Ben Stiller, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Robert Smigel, and Kevin Nealon.

Beyond Sandler, and presumably McDonald, it’s unclear who else might return for a sequel. We just hope Happy finally finds the other half of that bottle.
