Celebrities and brushes with the law, it’s not an uncommon news story in those glossy magazines or a trending hashtag on Twitter. We all know of the regular offenders but are there any celebs out there who have been in jail or arrested, who you might not have expected?
We’ve saved you the time spent searching to find an inmate with Jail Exchange, although it is a great site if you do need to locate someone behind bars, and have put together a quick top ten list of the surprising celebrities to have spent time inside…
10. Bruno Mars
The smooth singing, lady charmer of the music world was arrested and charged in 2010, with felony drug possession after a concert in Las Vegas. Well, we don’t think that fun personality trait will be used in any of his pick-up lines any time soon.
9. George Clooney
The silver fox was arrested for demonstrating against Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir in 2012, as the President is believed to have committed genocide. Whilst George and his Dad were taken into custody, their demonstrations were reasonably understandable.
8. Paul McCartney
The former Beatles star was arrested and held for 10 days in Japan for possession of 8 ounces of marijuana, which authorities discovered in his suitcase at the airport.
7. Chris Pine
Swoon worthy Chris Pine, the leading face of the Star Trek franchise, once tested positive on a breath test in New Zealand and pleaded guilty to drink driving in court. He was fined and banned from driving for six months, now we hope this ban doesn’t apply to space craft, otherwise the Star Trek universe is in big trouble with a Captain Kirk unable to drive.
6. Christian Slater
A baby faced Christian Slater spent 90 days in prison, followed by three months enforced rehab, after he assaulted his girlfriend and fought with police, under the influence of drugs.
5. Tim Allen
The star of the Santa Claus movies and the hit sitcom Home Improvement served a couple years in prison for drug trafficking. It seems Santa actually loved delivering Christmas presents to all of the naughty people. What was he delivering? Well let’s just say Tim pled guilty to carrying 1.4 lbs. of cocaine!
4. Wesley Snipes
The hybrid vampire slayer and action hero was arrested and spent three years in prison for tax evasion.
3. Martha Stewart
The homemaker and craft genius Martha Stewart, who has made a business out of her incredible talent for making beautiful things, was sent to prison for five months for lying to federal investigators after being questioned over corporate fraud. Apparently her time in prison didn’t affect her career at all, in fact when she got out she hosted television shows and wrote two new books.
2. Matthew McConaghey
Another star who dabbled with drugs and paid the price is Matthew McConaghey, who is now best known for roles in Magic Mike and Dallas Buyers Club. He was apparently found by police in the early hours of the morning, after complaints about noise at his home, naked and playing the bongos. McConaghey was held in jail overnight and apparently when asked about the experience said: “I don’t want to rent a place there, but it was a nice stay for the night.”
1. Mark Wahlberg
Our final, and most serious offence, on the list was charged against actor Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg was a drug dealer, a member of a gang and was hooked on cocaine. At the age of 16 he attacked two Vietnamese men in the street, in an unprovoked attack, permanently blinding one.
Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, but this was changed later to criminal contempt and a sentence of ten years. He pleaded guilty and was only sentenced for two years, of which he served 45 days. After his stint inside he decided to turn his life around and formed Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, before later becoming the actor we know (and love?) today.
