While the world is still buzzing over NikeSkims and wrapping their head around faux fur g-strings, we’re over here wondering how on earth Emma Grede handles it all.
If you’re familiar with Emma you already know that she is a founding partner and the CPO of Skims, the co-founder and CEO of Good American and the founder of Safely and Off Season.
Emma Grede, the powerhouse behind these brands, is changing the conversation around work-life balance. In a world obsessed with doing it all, her take is refreshingly real — and incredibly relevant for working parents.
You may have also listened or watched her conversation with Michael and Lauryn on The HIM & HER Show, TWICE!
The myth of having and doing it all
In one of the episodes Emma gets passionate about there’s no way that anyone has it all, while also doing it all. As a working mom of 4 kids she explains that she has an army of people around her to help with house work, drop offs, a cooking and other things that she personally doesn’t find important for her to do. But almost anything to do with her kids, from getting haircuts to cleaning their ears, she’s there for it.
So if you’re wondering how Emma does it all, she doesn’t. Being transparent about this when the pressure for working parents is at an all-time high is refreshing and a bit of a relief if we’re being honest.
Get comfortable with trade-offs
It’s safe to say Emma is becoming an ambassador for the illusion of the ‘work / life balance’ we’re told to strive for and recently told Gwyneth on ‘In Good Health‘ that life is a series of trade-offs:
“I do all the things. I’m up at 5, I’m working out, I’m manifesting, I’m meditating – until I’m not. Then I’m swearing at my husband, I’m being horrendous to everyone. I don’t believe in the balance. The balance went out the window. You have a sick kid, you have a sick kid. You have a deal to close, you have a deal to close. The reality of my life is that it’s a series of trade-offs and the quicker you become comfortable with that, the happier you will be. And I know for me, being honest about what I can give to everyone has helped me enormously.”
